5 ways to keep yourself entertained during lockdown!

lockdown blog

Right now, the Nation is in a strange and testing place. The Governments lockdown has forced people to stay in their homes, in order to help fight the virus and to protect our NHS. Whilst this is absolutely the right thing to do, it is challenging for a lot of us to occupy our time effectively.

So, with that in mind, we have put together a list of 5 things to do during lockdown! Hopefully you can learn new skills, have some fun and maybe even bond with your family.

Learn guitar!

Whether it’s a time or money issue, learning to play an instrument is one of those ‘things’ that has evaded many people.

Luckily, world renowned guitar manufacturers Fender have recently announced that they are offering free guitar lessons! Guitar lessons aren’t the only offering though. They are also offering Bass and Ukelele lessons.

Simply visit their website to sign-up for 3 months of free online lessons! Now you’ve got the time and don’t have to spend any money on lessons, you could be the next Jimi Hendrix…maybe.

Learn a language

Being bilingual has always been a massive advantage, whether applying for jobs or in social situations. So, why not use all this free time to learn a new language?

There are multiple apps and websites that allow you to learn. Apps such as Babbel and Duolingo also have free versions to help you get started.

To make it easier, you should learn with someone else in your house and practise conversation.

Virtual quizzes!

You don’t have to be an egghead to have fun with quizzes. You can also connect with other plays online, so don’t worry if you live alone.

Websites like Kahoot.it allow multiple players to log on and play! Plus, if you use a web chat app like Zoom or WhatsApp video, you can share screens and play with family and friends.

There are quizzes for the whole family to enjoy and they could also help with learning whilst schools are shut. If you want something a bit more ‘grown-up’ you can do online pub quizzes, which are being run by pubs forced to temporarily close.

Home workouts

Since being confined to the comfort of our homes, many of us will see a decrease in exercise. This could leave us feeling sluggish and de-motivated. It could also have a big impact on our kid’s fitness whilst schools are shut.

Fortunately, many big names are providing free fitness courses and videos. Take Joe Wicks for example. The fitness guru is providing free P.E lessons on YouTube, check out his YouTube channel and get the family involved!

Hollywood actor Chris Hemsworth is also providing 6-weeks free trail of his fitness regime Centre.com. If you’re looking for something a bit more intense and focussed, we recommend having a look into this.

Read more books

Reading is a great way to stay occupied and broaden your mind. Now you have more spare time than ever, why not grab some books off that dusty shelf!

If you have trouble with reading or prefer listening to books, you can start a 30-day free trial on Audible. It also includes a free book to get you started.

We hope you stay safe during the lockdown and please follow the advice from the Government. This free time could be seen as a blessing to spend more time with loved ones and to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of life for just a short while.

Using container storage in quirky ways!

At Safe & Dry, we offer container storage for the masses to store their personal or business items. Everything from tools, to archives, furniture and much more. However, there are some people that will use them for some really quirky purposes.  Here are some examples of the types of things that the magicians around the world are turning these solid, safe container storage units into…

  1. Swimming pools

Now you may be thinking, swimming pool – hole in the ground usually tilled or lined with a plastic sheet and filled with water? Not necessarily. A company called container pools are converting old shipping containers into pools that fit perfectly into your garden. Container Pools is one British company offering practical Aquaflex-lined pools with filters, heat pumps, underwater lights and ladders as standard. All you have to do is wait for the lovely British summer to make an appearance!

2. Pop up shop, bar or café

I’ve seen these around, one actually in Bournemouth on Landsdowne Road that offers burgers amongst a host of other food products. Transforming a shipping container into a food outlet or shop is a great way of having a potentially much cheaper premises to host your business. There’s also POP in Brixton which is a shipping container village full of container clothing shops, bars and pretty much every type of food you can imagine.

3. Shipping container school

School facilities are also looking in to this new forward thinking version. It is used especially when building schools in poverty-stricken parts of the world because of just how affordable it can be. The benefits of working with this process is the minimal installation time. This allows the classrooms to be ready for the kids much faster than traditional building methods.

4. Container houses (Mostly utilised in the Netherlands!)

The Netherlands are known for coming up with a LOT of quirky and cool inventions. They don’t all necessarily roll out across the world, but do certainly change the way we think. Starting from just €20,000 you can see why quite a few are starting to opt for this option. There is even a company in the Netherlands who will purpose build these container storage homes on your plot for you.

5.  Storage unit serviced offices

One of the most unique ideas on this list. Companies can spend thousands of pounds a year renting offices, desks and much more. Storage offers a secure, warm and dry premises for your office that will keep all your goods safe.

Get more out of storage!

So, you’ve decided to sign up for your very own personal container self-storage unit down here in Poole. Now comes the (not so fun) part of packing up your personal items ready for transport. Here are some tips and tricks to help cram as much as you can into your storage container.

Inventory

First, recognise exactly what items you would like to put into your container storage and make an inventory of these items/which box they’ll be in (an Excel spreadsheet is recommended, but if you’re organised a written list will do too). You can also do this on old school pen and paper if you’d prefer. For maximum organisation we’d suggest getting lined or boxed paper so you can break everything into sections.

Mark your boxes!

To start, this is important, make sure your boxes are sturdy. once you’ve found strong enough boxes, make sure they are ALL labelled. Label them clearly so it makes it easier to find them later.

Use the space wisely

Place the bulkier, less-used items towards the back of your storage container so you don’t have to rearrange them when accessing your unit. Set aside space at the front of your container for possessions that you may require regular access to. This allows for simple accessibility and ease when trying to find certain belongings later down the line. Just a quick point, access to our facility in Poole is 24/7!
